To All Heroes of Zen! 11 Top Tools to Fight the OverwhAAGhlm FOR GOOD!

So, you’re keeping it together, just. You’re doing the best you possibly can, juggling all your responsibilities, keeping yourself healthy, your relationships happy and your mind at peace

And even though most of the time you are ON it, feeling like a superhero of Zen and fighter of chaos, (all the while keeping a smile on your face)- deep down you have the niggling fear that its all gonna come crashing down… and without it even happening it hits you- the dreaded overwhelm….

BusinessPerhaps your meeting goes over and you lose half an hour from your day, or one of your kids or pets fall poorly. You are bombarded by a ton of unexpected and urgent emails, letters or requests that all need actioning ASAP or your brain just goes on information overload… your zen like state takes a hike and frazzled mess takes its place.

You feel your breathing quicken, your heart race, your palms go sweaty and your head turns into a scene from the movie Twister, and you know that nothing can be resolved from here…

Sounding familiar?

As a survivor myself and frequent visitor of this crazy-arse island of overwhelm chaos, I have a few tricks and tools up my sleeve that I would like to share with you to help you dodge the overwhelm and keep your super zen head on…

# 1. Anchor yourself with an image/ symbol/ picture

Just the simple act of glancing at a beautiful scene, a relaxing view or a picture of your pets, children or lrsz_life_is_goodoved one can be enough to bring you back to the present and find a place where you can look at the situation objectively and find a solution. You may wish to create your own anchoring affirmation poster using canva or spend some time to finding one that resonates on Pinterest or facebook. Right click on the image to save to your computer.

#2 Ground Yourself by Holding a Stone.

Holding anything to connect you and ground you to the earth and beneath you is a great way of getting out of your head. When you are grounded you are strong and more able to deal with the changing winds that life throws at you. Keep a stone at your desk, on your coffee table, in your glove compartment or in your coat pocket. Feel the smoothness and density of the rock and thank the earth for keeping you strong, grounded and centred. For more grounding exercises read William Blooms book on Psychic Protection. I absolutely love this book and use the exercises every day in my morning meditation.

#3. Pre-empt the moment of overwhAGGHlm by walking away from situation.

Go for a walk, pop to the toilet and take yourself away from the situation that’s causing you to react. Do a simple meditation for just a minute: Breathe in for five seconds, hold for five and release for five or any of the fabulous easy and quick meditations that Gabby Berntein suggests over at Gabby tv. Number 5 is my favourite:

3“Peace begins with you.
This technique is a fantastic Kundalini meditation that’s fast, easy and effective. You can also do this meditation anywhere. Gently press your thumb against your index finger, then your middle finger, then your ring finger, then your pinkie finger.
When you touch your index finger, say: PEACE
When you touch your middle finger, say: BEGINS
When you touch your ring finger, say: WITH
When you touch your pinkie finger, say: ME
Breathe deeply as you say each word. Go as slow or as fast as you’d like. Use this technique in line at the bank, under the desk in an office meeting or even in the middle of a fight with a partner or friend. This technique will get you through all kinds of crazy emotions and help you release resentment fast.” Gabby Bernstein


#4. Consciously shift your attitude to put everything into perspective.

Remember what’s really important and that you are ultimately the one in the driver’s seat. You have a choice how you react- either in love or fear. Love will always lead to the solution, fear will always lead to more fear… do this 10 Minute Attitude Shifter Exercise to gain perspective in any overwhelming situation.

#5. Remind yourself of your Big Vision.

Let your vision pull you forward rather than you pushing- let it take you naturally! Use this Big Vision Exercise from your Goal Setting Workbook to tune into your end goal for the year and let the excitement and light of it guide your way on.

#6. Pencil in at least 30 mins “you time” a day.

Daily PlannerMake your down time a priority to allow your stress levels to settle each day. The amount of stress hormones in your body can do great damage if not allowed time to rebalance. Make this a Non Negotiable Time and see prioritising “you” time is not self-indulgent but necessary to yours and your families happiness and wellbeing- seriously you are so important!! Take the time to give yourself the love you need to show up and shine.  Use this daily/ weekly planner template to ensure that you time is included in each of your days.

#7. Step out of micro and into macro world

When we are consumed by the many things going on in our heads and our lives at high stress moments, we cannot see the bigger picture and it becomes all too much. Take a moment to come back to the now, see what is really happening, what lessons can you learn from the situation, what opportunities for growth are in the situation, how can you learn to overcome the challenges so that you can help others overcome them… what is the situation telling you about you, about your attitude, behaviours, or about other peoples. Observe and analyse rather than letting the moment swallow you up.  Try journaling your thoughts to keep note and identify patterns and themes.

#8. Shake it out.

Get up and shake your bootie! Seriously, this works. It releases trapped energy from around your body, it loosens up your limbs and joints and gives you a giggle at the same time- this may not be appropriate in the work place, however it might help shift your work mates attitude 😉

#9. Sing a manta song.

I personally love mantra songs by Jai Jagdeesh. There are many that all mean different things but this one is for protection- as you listen and sing along (aad guray nameh, jugaad guray nameh, sat guray nameh, siri guru davey namah) imagine your angels wings surrounding you and giving you support and strength.

# 10. Surrender it All.

As one of my teachers Gabby Bernstein says in her book Miracles NowPray whenever you feel indecisive, overly obsessive or caught up in a fear spiral. Try not to pray for a specific outcome- instead pray for peace. Accessing a peaceful state of mind is all we really need.” Get on your knees and surrender it all- ask for help and guidance and trust that you will be shown the way. When you find that window of peace, take the opportunity to gain clarity and prioritise and plan:

First Things First#11. Prioritise.

Get clear on what your aiming for and allocate the time to making it happen. I find it really useful to use my First Things First Worksheet to see what I really need to do first and to see where there are conflicts in my goals, values and the urgency of things I have to do. Sometimes when we put something off as we don’t enjoy it but it necessary and leads to something you do enjoy- just the simple act of writing it down and seeing it on paper is enough to get your butt into gear and get it done! BONUS TIP (that is actually THE one that will help the most):

#12. Get a coach to help you with all of the above, to talk it all though with, clear your mind, find clarity and plan the way forward.

Having a coach is by far the best solution to keeping overwhelm at bay. I know, i’ve not had one for the past month and I am pan-ic-ing! Having a coach provides clarity, focus and direction. It gives you confidence, belief and motivation. It keeps you accountable so that you have a kick up the bum when you think “nah, I’ll do it later.” And it holds you in a container of openness, honesty, trust and compassion.

So when you feel the creeping up of a agghhhhhh moment brewing, remember that you are in control of your reactions, that your perception of the situation can be shifted in a moments alignment and centering and that when you get yourself back to sane calm, you are so much better able to see the solution that is staring you straight in the face.
